Christmas and Hogmanay in Scotland?
I live in a quiet and peaceful area (with about 6 houses, a farm and a church) about 5 minutes drive from the small town of Newton Stewart in Dumfries & Galloway. The house is a stone cottage that was converted from two shepherd's cottages (not by us) and is set in 4 acres of gardens that are fully fenced.
Newton Stewart is on the edge of the dark sky Dumfries & Galloway Forest Park where there are lots of walks. It's also close to some lovely beaches to walk on. It has two supermarkets, 2 mini-markets, a butchers and a greengrocers. Asda do online home delivery.
The house has 3 ensuite bedrooms plus a downstairs wet room. Your bedroom has a king sized bed (you can use the other rooms but my son and I will be in 2 of them until we leave on 11th December).
The town has a community one screen cinema that also has a pantomime at Christmas. It has an Indian, Chinese and Scottish restaurants plus quite a few cafes and pubs. Wigtown (Scotland's book town is about a 10 minute drive away). There's also a pub with a micro brewery about 30 minutes drive away.
If you like to tour distilleries there's the Crafty gin distillery and the Bladnoch whisky distillery.
On New Years Eve you can join in the torch light parade through Newton Stewart and the ceilidh.
Please note that I hope to be back home on 23rd January, however as I am visiting a remote location I have added an extra week in case the flight can't get to the island due to bad weather. If I am back on time you will of course be welcome to stay and do your own thing.
The wifi isn't fibre but the speed isn't too bad and is reliable.
It's preferable that you have your own car, otherwise a full clean driving license is needed (to put you on my insurance).
My dogs are Portuguese Water Dogs aged 11 and 5. The 11 year old has medication but he takes this without a problem in his food. Read more...
