More information about this house sitter

Salka - Aged 29. From Jyväskylä, Finland. Illustrator / Painter / Print-maker. Fluent English.

Thomas - Aged 26. From Oxford. Student (History). Not so fluent Finnish.

Since getting married we have spent most of our time living together in central Finland as the caretakers of Salka's family home - a beautiful off-grid lake island, surrounded by boreal forest.

Tom studies with the Open University - a distance learning institution, and before the Covid-19 pandemic our lifestyle depended on the ability to travel regularly between the UK and Finland. However, due to current circumstances, and the unpredictable border regulations, we have decided not to return to Finland and instead to remain in the UK for a while, at least until he graduates next year.

We have long-term small-holding goals in Finland. We hope to slowly learn how make the most of a modest patch of land there, and dream of buying more someday. The property has been in Salka's family for generations as a much loved summer house, but would really benefit from year-round care in the long-term and we are always keen for opportunities to develop more of the skills needed to make that happen.

Experience with pets/animals -

Tom - I have previously owned 1 beautiful Lurcher/Collie Mix, 1 Rescue Cat and 1 Hamster. I Have lived with and cared for a fresh water turtle, several rabbits, lots of cats and 7 very small chihuahuas with very big personalities. Whilst living with the owner of the chihuahuas there were two litters of puppies that were a pleasure to care for. Have spent time on farms.

Salka - Still angry at my dad for a distinct lack of pets in our household growing up. Still, luckily I was able to bypass this ultimatum by having friends, and later housemates, with pets. I lived with four dogs (1 King Charles Spaniel, and three German Shorthaired Pointers) for a over a year and took an active role in their care. I have spent lots of time on farms and don't mind getting my hands dirty.

We would love to have a pet but have had to wait until we are more settled, geographically speaking. We hope to get a Karelian Bear Dog as soon as we get back to Finland. They look a little bit like Border Collies but with the added benefit of helping to keep the bears away for everybody's benefit, including the bears. Read more...
