More information about this house sitter

We are a non-smoking couple in our late 50s with police checks. We have recently taken early retirement ─ from local government and software development respectively ─ and want to broaden our horizons. We both love animals and have had a succession of much loved pets throughout our lives. We own a rambling victorian house in Saltaire, West Yorkshire and have four grown up children.

As a child Gary kept a small menagerie and helped the local vet. He has wide experience with exotic pets so we can look after most kinds of animals; mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, tropical/coldwater fish or invertebrates. He also kept hens as a child - we would be very happy to be chicken-sitters. Our own household over the years has included various breeds of cat, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils and stick insects.

As members of the National Trust and English Heritage we are keen to stay across the UK but we also love going abroad. We have so far only house sat for friends and family (who will provide references). Animals we have cared for include fish, cats, a border collie, a spaniel, a very highly strung pomeranian and two delightful border terriers, who kept us on our toes last summer. Our most recent dog was a greyhound - a breed of which we are particularly fond.

We had a successful house-swap with a French family and have travelled across Europe using AirBnB. Our references can be seen on Guardian Home Exchange and AirBnB.

We have Police Disclosure Forms issued on 11 April 2016 and could provide personal references from previous employers. We both had CRB clearance from various voluntary roles working with children and vulnerable adults. I am on the Board of Trustees at our local community centre and could ask them to vouch for me.

I enjoy gardening and would be willing to undertake some duties outside, as well as caring for houseplants. Through house-sitting for friends and AirBnB, we are accustomed to caring for other people's houses and respecting their neighbours.

We have a car, so location should not be an issue and are happy to consider town or country locations. We are both non-smokers.

At the moment we are not looking for stays of over a month, although we might consider one if something special came up. Read more...
